For more than thirty years,
the
Police Athletic League has run a youth floor hockey league in Fall
River. Every week over 300 young people from six to 18 years of age
participate twice a week from September through February. Over thirty
games are run Monday through Thursday evening and Saturdays from 9:00
a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the rink in the gym behind the old Silvia School at
127
Hartwell Street. Both boys and girls participate at no charge and
everyone plays, regardless of ability or handicap. Twenty-eight teams
compete against one another and trophies are given out at
the annual banquet held at White's restaurant in April. An adult
tournament is also held every year pitting teams from the Police
Department against one another. The entire program is sponsored by members of the
Fall River Police Department, referees
and parents who volunteer their time; there are no paid staff. Numerous
donations from area businesses pay for equipment and other expenses. For
further information, contact Detective Larry Ferreira at 508-676-8511,
Ext. 257. |
