The Milliken-Silva basketball league was begun fifty years ago by Frank Milliken and Larry Silva to give Fall River youth an opportunity to play competitive basketball in the elementary and middle-school years. Begun in the Wixon School gym, the program recently moved to the new elementary school facility at the Spencer-Borden school on President Avenue. The program has been co-ed until recently when, with the increased interest on the part of girls, a separate girls' league was begun three seasons ago. Teams are composed of girls in 7th and 8th grades, 5th & 6th, and now as young as 3rd & 4th grade. Each of the younger teams plays one night a week with practice on Saturday. Older teams may play two nights a week. Any Fall River resident is welcome to sign up when the season begins in October. A small fee is charged to help support the teams, but the fee can be waived if the expense would be a hardship. For further information, contact Attorney Thomas Quinn III at 508-673-1116.
