A production
crew begun work at Columbus Park in Fall River on August 10, 2006, on a
half-hour video to help youth look at their own health from a life-long
perspective.
"Adolescence is a
critical time for health," commented Dr. David Weed, coordinator of the
Healthy City project and author of the script. "It is a time when
attitudes about eating and exercise are often adopted for life. It is
also a time when many people discover the addictive properties of
tobacco, alcohol and other drugs and struggle with attempts at cessation
for the first time. Most of the chronic health problems that adults
experience in Fall River, such as heart disease and diabetes, have their
origins in behaviors acquired in youth." The video is being produced entirely with students from
Fall River Educational Television (FRED-TV)
located
at
B.M.C. Durfee High School by Partners for a Healthier Community for
the Healthy City initiative. "The entire production is being made in
Fall River with local talent," commented Pauline McGrath, Executive
Producer and Instructor at FRED-TV. "The finished production will
connect with many familiar places," she said. Rene Kochman, Director of
Media Technology for FRED-TV who will oversee the production. The
project is being funded by linkage funds from
Southcoast Hospitals that the
Department of Public Health awards to Partners for a Healthier
Community each year. Local business, including
Dunkin' Donuts and
D'Angelos, donated food for the crew for their first day of filming.
The production is scheduled for its first airing at the
Healthy City Fall River spring celebration event in April, 2007. |
